TheVIT launches new report:
Practical tools to prevent sick leave

How can Norwegian companies be more successful in reducing sick leave - and what characterizes those who actually succeed?

Norway is at the very top internationally when it comes to sick leave. In 2024 alone, more than 39 million working days were lost - at a cost to society of NOK 236 billion. The figures have remained stable at a high level for several years, and the challenge is both complex and multifaceted. This is the introduction to the report "On the inside of sick leave", written by Kristine Seim, Pia Marie Jenssen and Mathias Vigdal at TheVIT.

The report summarizes the findings in seven lessons that show where the barriers lie - and which measures produce results. One of the clearest findings is that the role of the manager is crucial. The findings show that many managers lack confidence and awareness of their role in sickness absence work. In addition, we see that complex routines and tools contribute to the work being de-prioritised in a busy management day. The companies that succeed best are characterised by clear structures, systematic training and a culture where attendance is a shared responsibility.

"What characterizes companies with low sickness absence is not more hours in the working day, but that they have established smart structures that make work manageable in everyday life."
says Pia Marie Jenssen.

The report also highlights the importance of impact measurement and strategic use of data. "Many companies collect data, but do little to use it to prevent rather than react. Those that succeed use data actively to understand trends, measure the effect of measures - and act early.
In addition, NAV is highlighted as a valuable but often underutilized partner. Expert assistance, the employer hotline and digital solutions can be powerful tools - when used actively as part of the company's toolbox.

"If we manage to talk about sickness absence in the same way as financial results, it becomes relevant to senior management - and then we can really make a change," says Kristine Seim.

The aim of the report is to inspire companies to rethink sickness absence - not just as an HR issue, but as a strategic investment in both people and the company's work on sustainability.
